This report describes a review of the decking market in Australia and overseas. It found that whilst dominated by hardwood, particularly imported hardwood, it may face increasing competition from composite products.
Although timber decking opportunities for market growth still existed, anecdotally a large market share has been taken away from timber, particularly due to choices from government buyers. Other considerations noted pertained to requirements for bushfire resistance as well as increased demand by consumers for improved quality.
The report highlights opportunities that exist through the growth in the remodelling, alteration and addition markets as more homeowners are tending to renovate their existing homes rather than relocate. These homeowners are also inclined to have more funds available and are likely to demand higher quality products to match their increased wealth. Opportunities such as with building regulators now considering the benefits of outdoor/indoor living areas i is also considered.
